You have heard it before, I’m sure: If the sky is interesting, show a lot of it and minimize the earthscape. If the landscape is interesting and the sky is devoid of merit, maximize the former and minimize the latter.
In this case, there was an interesting pre-dawn sky above Pikess Peak (high point in the distance) while the intervening horizons and valleys were still painted with the heavy shadows of night.
